Two western Nebraska motel managers have been accused of enslaving an illegal immigrant for more than a year, forcing him to engage in menial labor.
50-year-old Vishnubhai Chaudhari and 44-year-old Leelabahen Chaudhari both pleaded guilty in federal court in Omaha to a count of conspiracy and another count of alien harboring for financial gain.
The two managed a Super 8 Motel in Kimball, located in the Panhandle.
They forced the Indian national, known only as “M.C.” in court documents, to clean rooms, do laundry, and other chores seven days a week. Federal investigators say the two knew M.C. was in the country illegally.
M.C. was instructed not to speak with motel guests. They hid him when police officers came to the motel. Federal investigators say the two regularly assaulted the man.
A motel guest and local police helped the man escape.
