University of Nebraska – Lincoln alum, students and the community are invited to campus on Friday morning to see Cather and Pound Halls tumble into a pile of rubble. Campus Housing Director Sue Gildersleeve says the dorms are old and require too much maintenance. It is cost prohibitive to bring them up to modern standards so it is best they come down now.
Gildersleeve says, “Unfortunately the cost to do just significantly outweighed the benefits in what we could provide in amenities and the kinds of things that students today want.”
Gildersleeve says obviously the campus is very tight. It takes a great deal of care and preparation to bring these buildings down without damaging any of the nearby structures.
Both dorms will be imploded at 9 a.m. Friday morning. UNL designated the top of the parking garage at 18th and Vine as a great place to come and watch event happen.
