Now, the elderly California couple has been charged with suspicion of carrying drug money.
80-year-old Patrick Jiron and 70-year-old Barbara Jiron of Clear Oaks, California face new criminal charges after having been released from jail.
Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies stopped the couple on Interstate 80 earlier this week. Their daughter was driving. Deputies found $18,000 in cash that “tested positive for a strong odor of marijuana.” The couple denied the money was theirs.
The couple has been released from the Lancaster County jail after posting bail. The daughter has not been charged. The two are scheduled to appear in court next week.
Last month, just before Christmas, deputies from York County stopped the couple. A search of the vehicle discovered 60 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $336,000. Deputies also found multiple containers of concentrated THC.
The couple told authorities they had planned to distribute the marijuana to family and friends in Massachusetts and Vermont as Christmas gifts.
