January is a great time to wet a fishing line and there is an event tomorrow designed to show you how to ice fish. Nebraska Game and Parks Commission spokesperson Greg Wagner says they are conducting an on-ice clinic Saturday at Lake Wanahoo State Recreation Area from 1 until 4 p.m.
Wagner says, “Ice fishing is a fast growing winter sport. We are trying to capitalize on that. Also, this is something fun to do for a family on a nice winter day where we have plenty of ice to experience the fun of ice fishing. Limited equipment will be available. Bait and instruction will be provided. If you have your own equipment, bring that.”
Participants will learn how to safely drill a hole and possibly catch some great pan fish that Wagner says are the best when they come fresh out of the ice.
Lake Wanahoo is located in Saunders County north of Wahoo. A 2018 park entry permit or a day permit is required and those over 16 must have a current fishing license to participate.
