Creighton coach Greg McDermott says the phrase “next man up” is great coach speak but it is not as easy as it sounds. A week after losing sophomore forward Martin Krampelj to a season-ending ACL injury the Bluejays are still working on adjustments as they prepare to host Georgetown on Saturday night.
“It is kind of a double-edged sword”, said McDermott. “On one hand you need the practice time to try to improve but on the other hand you are a man down so the last thing you can afford to do is beat your guys up with too much time on the practice floor at this time of year.”
McDermott says replacing a key play always takes time and requires several different players to step up. With Krampelj sidelined senior forward Toby Hegner has reached double figures in three straight games.
“Toby has always been able to shoot the ball”, added McDermott. “The fact that he shoots it so well forces teams to guard him and if you have to guard him that spreads the floor for everybody else.”
Creighton is 6-3 in the BIG EAST following a 68-63 win at St. John’s.
