The American Red Cross has started its 2018 Volunteer Recruitment Drive. Matthew Thieschafer is the Volunteer Services Senior Specialist for Nebraska, Southwest Iowa and Kansas and says they have great opportunities for people who want to help others facing disaster.
Thieschafer says, “We are looking for volunteers to fill a wide variety of roles. Those include people to respond to disasters large and small. They include tornadoes, floods, and home fires.”
Thieschafer says they are also looking for volunteers who work behind the scenes. That includes dispatching volunteers to disaster areas, coordinating efforts to those who can provide specialty needs that include mental health or medical expertise.
Most of the roles require on-call hours where the volunteers sign up for specific shifts that meet their availability. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and commit to one year of service. Approximately 20 hours of training is required and that is provided at no cost to the volunteer.
Those wanting to sign up or get more information can log on to redcross.org.
