U-S Sen. Deb Fischer said today she supports enforcement of background checks for those buying firearms.
Fischer, responding in wake of the Florida school shooting that killed 17, said the problem hasn’t been the law, it has been enforcement of the law.
“I have voted for background checks to be able to make sure that information is given into the system. What we’ve seen is a breakdown of that system in the past,” Fischer said when questioned during a news conference on another subject in Lincoln today.
Fischer said Congress needs to strengthen the system and address methods to make it work.
She also said federal agencies need to be able to better identify those prone to such violence.
“And there are signs that are out there and in this latest shooting there were signs that were there,” according to Fischer. “The house was visited I think 39 times. The FBI was contacted. We have a system in place, but as with anything, it’s not going to work unless it’s followed.”
