The next new exhibit at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium will take visitors on a journey though Asia. Director Dennis Pate says construction of the Asian Highlands is underway and visitors will be able to enter a Himalayan themed forest. He says phase one is expected to open in May.
Pate says phase one includes red pandas, white nape crane, tufted deer, rhinos and Pere David deer. The second phase will include sloth bears, tigers, snow leopards and two new animals to the zoo – goral, a kind of a Himalayan goat and Sichuan takin.
Some of the animals have never been at the Omaha zoo before and others have been absent for many years. Visitors will also be able to walk through a representation of the high Himalayan villages.
The new exhibit will be located on eight acres near the aviary.
