This is a emotional day for about 4,000 Nebraskans commonly known as DREAMers. Alexis Steele is an attorney with the Immigrant Legal Center in Nebraska and says groups across the state will gather today as the DACA deadline arrives.
Steele says, “From Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding areas are collaborating across the state to rally DREAMers and send a clear message to Congress to pass a clean DREAM act. Today is especially important because this was the day there was the threat to rescind those protections that DACA has since afforded.”
Steele says that won’t happen today as there are several injunctions in California and New York with cases regarding DACA, that has prevented the Trump Administration from acting. However, today is every symbolic because these young people don’t know what their future holds.
Due to this symbolic deadline day there will be a candlelight vigil at the Nebraska State Capitol today at 5:30. There will be a “Stop Playing Games” vigil at Memorial Park in Omaha starting at 6 p.m. In Columbus, Centro Hispano traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in the national event. In Crete there will be a screening of “We Are Dreamers”, a documentary telling the stories of young people in Nebraska at 7 p.m. at Doane University. The “We All Belong” community gathered in Lexington on Sunday.
