Some parents of children in Nebraska believe they would be better off in a private school but finances prevent them from providing that opportunity. Western Douglas County State Senator Lou Ann Linehan is sponsoring a bill that would make that possible.
LB 295 would allow for “Opportunity Scholarships” that would be funded by private donation. Senator Linehan says there is a lot of misinformation out there about the bill. This is not a voucher system, would not take money away from public schools and would in increase property taxes.
Senator Linehan says, “It would give a tax benefit, tax credit for giving money to scholarship granting organizations that will turn around and help low income kids access the school of their choice. All this bill does is encouraging the things we have encouraged for decades at least. When you give private donations to organizations that serve the public good, whether that be private schools or the State Fair Board or other things we donate money to, there is a tax benefit to that. That is all that LB 295 does.”
Senator Linehan says this is also about giving low income people that upper and high income people have. They may want their children in a smaller school or a church based school. She says, “It is giving the same opportunity only to lower income people that all the rest of us enjoy.”
