A bill is under consideration in the Legislature that attempts to address the growing opiate problem. State Senator Steve Halloran of Hastings is the co-sponsor of LB 931 that focuses on limiting prescription amounts to younger Nebraskans.
Senator Halloran says, “It is targeted towards 19 and younger so that the parents and guardians are signing off with that minor when they get their prescriptions. It does limit the amount of the prescription to a seven day supply. It does require an photo ID and requires something that is common sense and that is the practitioner discusses the risks and why they are prescribing the opioid to the patient. We want to make sure that minors are protected from over prescriptions.”
There are exceptions for those with cancer, palliative care or chronic pain.
Senator Halloran says there were several bills dealing with opioid addiction introduced this session. He says in a rare case of bipartisan support the bills were combined after finding they were compatible.
