Nebraska leaders will hold a news conference on Friday at the State Capitol to launch the Insure The Good Life campaign. Molly McCleery is the Deputy Director of Healthcare Access for Nebraska Appleseed and says this effort would allow Nebraskans to vote on expanding Medicaid coverage in the state.
McCleery says, “This would be the kick-off for following the language to eventually do a signature collection. It would be on the November 2018 ballot and we would need roughly 85,000 signatures.”
McCleery says this is an important issue for Nebraska and there will be a few individuals speaking that have been personally impacted by the lack of Medicaid expansion. Others will also speak on how this is important to the state as a public health issue and also an economic perspective. Expanding Medicaid would provide long-overdue health coverage for approximately 90,000 hardworking Nebraskans.
Thirty-two states have already expanded Medicaid successfully. Several other states are currently working on expansions. Organizers says since lawmakers have done nothing to solve this problem it is time for Nebraskans to decide.
The Insure The Good Life event will start at 11 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda at 14th and K Streets in Lincoln.
