A police chase in Omaha Thursday ended with shots fired, a crash and the suspect and officer hospitalized.
Captain Kathy Gonzalez says it started around 2:30 p.m. She says, “The Gang Unit was conducting an operation. A uniformed officer was called to conduct a traffic stop on Highway 75 at Lake Street. Information preliminary states the officer did struggle with the occupant of that vehicle and shots were fired. The vehicle fled and at Highway 75 just north of Q Street where it ultimately crashed.” That chase hit speeds of 80 mph and the suspects’ vehicle and was being tracked by the police helicopter.
The suspect, identified as 21 year old Micah Taylor was struck by a gunshot to the neck. He is in stable condition and will be booked on charges once he is released.
The injured officer, 49 year old David Staskiewicz is a 19 year veteran of the department and suffered a non-gun related injury during a struggle with Taylor. He was treated and released. Highway 75 was closed well into the evening hours.
The Douglas County attorney has been briefed and the investigation continues.
