Calling the $1.3 trillion Omnibus spending bill “ridiculous”, President Trump signed it last month saying one of the only reasons is that it provided funding for our military. Congressman Don Bacon says they couldn’t get more money for defense without passing $50 billion for non-defense domestic spending. He says the military needs that money now.
Congressman Bacon says, “The military is close to falling flat on its face. We were told by the four stars that readiness rate, our statistics are the worse they’ve seen since 1977. That is not good for deterrence. That is not good for peace.” He goes on to say that half the Navy aircraft today can’t fly. We have 58 combat brigades in the Army and only five can fight tonight. Fighter pilots before they deploy for combat are only getting in eleven hours a month flying. That is about one-third of what they need. There were also 80 fatalities doing routine operations last year.
Congressman Bacon says, “We had an option. Vote no and have a shut down. Have a continuing resolution where the military gets no addition to that 18% reduction or say yes and boost up our military by 10%.” He says the only way to get that done was to work a compromise deal with the Senate to get past a filibuster.
Meanwhile, President Trump sent a Tweet earlier this week that DACA was dead because the Democrats failed to act. He went on to say that we must build a wall and secure or borders with proper legislation. Congressman Bacon agrees with parts of Trump’s message. He says, “We need to upgrade our immigration system. Right now catch and release doesn’t work. The president is right on that. We also owe it to kids who have been here since they were three. I’ve met many of them who only know this place as their country. We have grounds for compromise. We can’t walk away from that. We can secure the border, upgrade our immigration system and find a permanent solution to DACA. When I go around the district that is about what 80% of our constituents want.”
