Not all legislative debates involve words.
Sen. John Murante of Gretna faced more than just counter points during debate on his voter photo ID measure.
He faced a stare down.
As Murante spoke on the legislative floor, Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha set up only a few feet away and stared directly at him, bringing a response from Murante.
“This schtick doesn’t do anything for me,” Murante said, staring back at Chambers. “I’ve seen it done before. It might work on other people, Sen. Chambers, but I can assure you it doesn’t do anything for me. Because the more you fight me, the more my constituents back in Sarpy County say I’m doing the right thing.”
Later in debate, Chambers said he simply was exercising his constitutional right to stare.
