A 42-year-old Omaha man has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident which left a motorcyclist dead.
Omaha police report officers arrested Luis Velasquez-Ortiz, alias Luis Cruz-Ortiz, after serving a search warrant on his residence. Velasquez-Ortiz has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury or death.
On Wednesday, 31-year-old Juan Moreno-Tamayo was riding east on Q Street shortly after 6:30am when a sports utility vehicle traveling north on 32nd Street failed to yield for a stop sign and ran over the motorcycle. Both Moreno-Tamayo and the motorcycle slid underneath the SUV.
The driver fled the scene, running over the motorcycle and the rider.
Omaha Fire Department medics pronounced Moreno-Tamayo dead at the scene.
A search began for the SUV and the owner to whom it was registered, leading to the arrest of Velasquez-Ortiz.
