The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has emergency funding to help ranchers impacted by recent snow storms.
“It helps cover losses of livestock due to an eligible, adverse weather event above normal mortality,” Heidzig-Kraeger tells Nebraska Radio Network. “So we might have, since it’s calving season, calves being lost due to the blizzard conditions that went through.
She says payments are based on the animal’s weight, kind, and type.
Ranchers have a tight deadline to begin the process of receiving payment.
“They should contact their local county office to do a notice of loss and they have 30 days from when that loss is apparent to do that notice of loss,” Heidzig-Kraeger explains. “The application for payment isn’t due until 90 days after the end of the calendar year.”
