Secretary of State John Gale says too few state senators returned letters to his office for the Unicameral to call itself into special session to discuss property tax relief.
The deadline to notify the Secretary of State was 5 o’clock this evening.
Sen. Tom Brewer of Gordon attempted to convince state senators to extend the debate on property taxes, arguing that the legislature would be more effective in a special session devoted solely to one issue. Lawmakers failed to pass property tax relief this session.
Gale had sent out letters to all 49 senators after Brewer and 12 others sent him a letter requesting the special session. Senators had 10 days to return the letters indicating support for re-gathering at the Capitol. Only Sen. Merv Riepe of Ralston joined the 13 senators in requesting the special session. Thirty-three senators had to agree for the legislature to meet in special session.
