There is a very serious and frightening scam underway in Saunders County. Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz says the scammers are using a tactic to terrify the victims with intense threats and intimidation.
Sheriff Stukenholtz says, “They start out, we have your son. He has gone far this time. He owes us too much money. You can either pay us the $4,000 he owes us or we are going to start breaking legs. They have it orchestrated where someone is screaming in the background. They tell them if the hang up, you will never see him again. We will kill him and be done with it.”
The victim is then given specific instructions as what to do next. They are ordered to stay on the phone and the caller wants to hear the door close, hear them get into a vehicle and start the motor. The victims are then told to purchase a money order, put it in the mail and destroy all the evidence.
Sheriff Stukenholtz says, “in some cases they have done a lot of homework. Had pretty specific information about the family member and some of them have been in trouble with the law before which made the call seem more real.”
About a dozen families have reported the scam to the Sheriff’s Office but unfortunately several have fallen victim and are out thousands of dollars.
