A piece of Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium history is no more.
Demolition crews this morning torn down the Red Barn Park Petting Zoo that has stood near the north entrance since the 1960’s.
Zoo Director Dennis Pate says in its place will be the new Carousel Plaza and it will accommodate the growing crowds. He says there will be many new features.
Pate says, “You will see a sweet shop, probably triple the number of restrooms you’ve had before. There will be an outdoor shaded nursing area for moms. There will be ten walk-up windows for food.” They are also adding a new guest services area and a play area for children.
Pate says they have added many new attractions to the north entrance in recent years and the current amenities were not adequate. He says the restrooms and food services were inadequate. They were also having significant infrastructure problems in that area that include the plumbing, the water deliver service and the sewers.
This is one of several ongoing projects at Nebraska’s largest tourist attraction. The new Carousel Plaza should open next spring.
