The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee came to terms on a good National Defense Authorization Act focuses on several important Issues. Senator Deb Fischer is on that committee and says important components in that bill include nuclear modernization with missile defense, space as a war domain, cyber security and improvements at Offutt Air Force Base right here in Nebraska.
Senator Fischer says, “We are making sure we keep the runway. At the forefront we were able to fight for and get it put in the bill for the 135’s. The funding had been taken out but I worked with the minority ranking member of the committee, Senator Reed and we were able to reach a consensus there.”
Fischer says that is every important for Offutt and for the pilots and crew members of those planes that they have a safe vehicle to perform their duties. Fischer expects floor debate to start soon.
Senator Fischer is also pleased that discussions regarding the U.S. Summit with North Korea are again on the table. Vice President of North Korea’s Workers Party Central Committee Kim Yong Chol is expected to arrive in the U.S. on Wednesday to discuss the summit. She says this is encouraging news and that President Trump deserves the credit for making this happen.
Senator Fischer says, “I think the president thinks outside the box to make some good moves with policy. We are seeing that as well with the meeting with the North Koreans. We are moving forward. For him to be able to weave his way through that with this ruthless dictator, I’m encouraged where we are right now.”
