A 35-year-old Waverly mother faces charges in the December death of her infant son.
Ashley Bean has been arrested by Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of felony child abuse.
Sheriff’s Captain Ben Houchin says the investigation determined Bean had been drinking, had fallen asleep, and rolled over onto the baby.
“Due to her level of intoxication on that evening the child died from asphyxiation from being rolled over on top of,” Houchin tells reporters at a media briefing.
Houchin says the investigation concluded Bean knowingly and intentionally placed her infant son in a situation that endangered his life.
Authorities have declined to release the name of the baby.
Emergency crews responded to the Waverly home on the morning of December 17th. The baby had no pulse. First taken to a Lincoln hospital, the infant was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Omaha. He was pronounced dead later that morning.
Houchin calls the death a tragedy all the way around.
“During the interviews it was determined that she was under the influence of alcohol to the point that she was unable to take care of her infant child,” Houchin says. “And, due to her intoxication, the child was injured which resulted in the child’s death.”
