One person is dead, five have been shot and wounded in gunfire which erupted in the Old Market area of Omaha Saturday night.
20 year old Jasmine Harris was killed in an altercation around 11:45 p.m.
The other victims have been identified as 28 year old Dewayne Staley Jr., 15 year old Makye Thomas, 16 year old Kristin Prater, 18 year old Velia Vasquez, 20 year old Robert McGee-Gould and 19 year old Gregory Austin. All of the other victims are expected to recover.
This shooting happened after a riverfront weekend festival, the first of many events that will be held in the area this summer. Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert wants visitors and residents to know that the downtown area is safe.
Mayor Stothert says, “We will increase our police presence in that area. Chief Todd Schmaderer and I have been talking for weeks right now about creating a special division to monitor the Old Market – not that is unsafe but because more and more people that will be visiting there in the next month or so because of the College World Series.”
Mayor Stothert says we have a very safe downtown and because of one incident you can’t issue a blanket statement that the area is now unsafe. She says this is one gang related incident and police are working diligently to identify those responsible.
