Gunfire erupted around 11:45 Saturday night at 11th and Farnam Street in Omaha. 20 year old Jasmine Harris was killed, 28 year old Dewayne Staley Jr., 15 year old Makye Thomas, 19 year old Gregory Austin, 16 year old Kristen Prater, 18 year old Velia Vasquez and 20 year old Robert McGhee-Gould were all injured.
Greg Evans was with that group and says they had just left the Taste of Omaha festival along the riverfront. His group decided to go the Gene Leahy Mall to hang out for a while before heading home. He was sitting in the passenger seat of a car when the gunfire started.
Evans says, “There wasn’t gunfire at the vehicle at first so we just ducked to the floor of the car and started the car. As soon as we heard gunfire toward the car, there was loud metal popping noise and glass is breaking. That is when we opened the driver’s door and exited the vehicle, which messed up my hand. I got it pretty good, gashes in my hand because of the glass that was broken. We both dove to the ground and ran from the scene.
Evans says the vehicle was hit several times and it appeared they were caught in the crossfire.
Evans says none in the group were involved in an altercation at the festival. He was told it closed early because of fighting. That is when the group decided to gather at the downtown mall, a sunken park. Evans says, “That night should not have ended like that, especially for Jasmine.”
While he doesn’t want to live in fear, Evans says it will be a while before he goes back to the downtown area. He also complemented the Omaha police department for working hard and trying to keep everyone safe. So far there have been no arrests.
