The promoter of the Taste of Omaha is refuting statements that fights at the event caused them to close early Saturday night. Some had stated that a fight led to gunfire between rival gang members blocks away. 20 year old Jasmine Harris was killed and six others injured by gunfire.
Organizer Mike Mancuso says, “The Taste of Omaha had no incidents and no shooting in the 21 years of the festival. Never has there been any major occurrence and we don’t appreciate being a part of the discussion. This is a family festival that is enjoyed by thousands. We want to keep it a safe environment and we had more security than we’ve ever had at the festival.”
Mancuso says the vent was on schedule and closed after the fireworks show at 11 p.m. He says everything was quiet and calm and everyone had exited the area. The shooting didn’t happen until 11:45 and that was blocks away from the gates.
Mancuso is very appreciative of the support they get from the Omaha Police Department and the team they put together for security. He says they will continue to make the event as safe as they can in the future.
