After Saturday’s deadly shooting near the Old Market area of Omaha, City Councilman Chris Jerram is looking at implementing a curfew for those 18 and under. Some have suggested putting a curfew in place in the downtown area where large groups tend to gather for concerts, festivals and socialization but that isn’t an option.
Jerram says, “You cannot do it in a targeted area. What I am looking at is if you can do it in a targeted season, such as the summer and give the police chief or mayor to the flexibility to declare a start and stop time for the season.”
Jerram says the downtown area is no more dangerous than other parts of the city. He says there are only a few people that cause problems in the city an where they encounter one another is random. He says it could happen out in west Omaha as easily as it could happen downtown. Others say it is a downtown issue because thousands gather there daily to visit, shop, for concerts or other events.
Jerram says before introducing an ordinance he wants to make sure he has the support of the mayor, the city council, the police chief and businesses in the community.
