The Nebraska Department of Natural Resources and all seven of Nebraska’s natural resource districts have teamed up in the name of water use efficiency. General Manager of the Lower Loup Natural Resource District, Russel Callen, says the Lower Platte River Basin Coalition works by making sure all seven resource districts in Nebraska and the department use the same information. Callan says that way everyone is on the same page on how Nebraska uses its water resources.
“The Coalition was put together with the seven NRDs and the Department of Natural Resources to make sure everyone was kind of on the same page as far as water management, water consumption,” Callan tells Nebraska Radio Network. His hope is that the coalition will act as a watchdog to ensure Nebraska’s water supply is used as efficiently as possible.
Callan says Nebraska has plenty of water resources; using them efficiently now could help prevent a crisis later.
“You know, it’s kind of our job and our mission to use them wisely, make sure we don’t over use them, and help develop economically while protecting those natural resources,” according to Callan.
