Work is underway at T-D Ameritrade Park in Omaha as the city prepares for the College World Series. Police Lt. Jay Leavitt says they are placing concrete jersey barriers around the stadium as an added layer of protection for fans.
Lt. Leavitt says, “There is no specific threat to the World Series or anything. It is just when crowds gather there is a better chance that somebody may take advantage of that and try to hurt a crowd with a vehicle.”
The barriers will protect fans entering and exiting the stadium and those waiting in line to get tickets.
It will be nearly impossible for any vehicle to penetrate that barrier. Each barrier weighs between 5,000 and 7,000 pounds and when they are linked together it becomes even more secure.
The safety measure is in response to sidewalk attacks around the world.
