The Fourth of July and all of the barbecue and fireworks that comes with is still weeks away, but today marks another holiday that Nebraska’s Secretary of State believes is still extremely significant. Today is Flag Day and Secretary of State John Gale tells Nebraska Radio Network News the holiday is important because of what the flag means to American identity.
“The Flag represent, in so many ways, so many of the ideals and high purposes of our constitution and of our representative government system.” says Gale.
It’ Gale’s belief that the flag is a symbol that can unite Americans no matter the race, religion, or political affiliation.
In a press release, Gale says he likes to use the holiday to promote a free, state service that lets residents to fly their own American or Nebraska state flag above the Capitol. Gale says people often request the service to mark special occasions like birthdays or graduations. If your flag is flown over the Capitol, you will receive a keepsake certificate signed by Gale stating the date flown and purpose of the flight.
