Baseball history will be made in Nebraska next year. Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers will play a game at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
Manfred says, “We like to be places where young people are playing the game. Whether it is college players. Whether it is little league players. We want to be in those locations. We think Omaha fits both of those best.” He says they hope by playing in Omaha will bring even more attention to this game and strengthen their association with the NCAA and college baseball as a whole.
Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore says they are excited for this opportunity. Moore says, “This is our fan base. This is a community that has been very kind to us. This is a community that has raised our players.”
Manfred says while no commitment has been made, an annual game in Omaha could eventually happen.
The game is scheduled for June 13, 2019, two days before the start of the College World Series.
The Royals will also be in Omaha next march to play an exhibition game against the Omaha Storm Chasers.
