The closed sign is up at NP Dodge Park in north Omaha. The park borders the Missouri River and Parks and Recreation Director Brook Bench says they closed and evacuated the park at 8 Monday night due to high river levels.
Bench says, “Projections have been up for the last few days so we started last week. All of the other user groups are aware of this. We have to shut power off if it gets to a certain points and it makes it a lot easier for us and for the safety of the people. Coming down to the river’s edge when it is this rapid is just not a good thing.”
Bench says hopefully this is not a long event like what happened in 2011 when the Missouri River flooded for weeks. He is hoping the water levels will quickly go back down.
The Missouri River is also high in Bellevue and that prompted their parks department to close Haworth RV Park. City officials say it has been determined that the park is not safe to occupy. The walking trail at American Heroes Park is also closed until further notice.
