Legislation that would broadly legalize marijuana in Nebraska may be introduced to the Unicameral in the near future, according to a state senator who has pushed to legalize medical marijuana.
State Senator Anna Wishart of Lincoln says she has studied the issue at great length and believes legalizing marijuana beyond medical use could present a great opportunity for Nebraska.
“We should look at legalizing hemp at least,” Wishart tells Nebraska Radio Network affiliate KLIN, “and then we should also look more broadly at cannabis reform; see what revenue we could bring in.”
Wishart says Nebraska should take notes from other states which have already broadly legalized cannabis. Then, says Wishart, lawmakers should “look and see whether the benefits outweigh the costs.”
Wishart has been a strong champion of the issue. Last legislative session, she introduced a bill that would legalize medical cannabis in Nebraska (LB622). She also introduced a resolution that would put medical cannabis to a vote of the people (LR293CA).
Wishart says broad cannabis reform would help those in need of its medicinal purposes while also adding a new cash crop for state farmers to grow.
Wishart says she’s continuing to research the issue and wouldn’t be opposed to introducing such a bill sometime in the future.
