Fireworks are banned in Nebraska state parks for most of the year but six recreation areas will allow them this Fourth of July holiday. Sections of Branched Oak, Fort Kearney, Memphis , Freemont Lakes, Pawnee and Wagon Train state recreation areas are allowing fireworks the from 8 a.m until midnight the day of the Fourth. Assistant Division Administrator Bob Hanover with Nebraska Game and Parks says designated areas will have signage.
“They’re pretty obvious,” says Hanover,” They’re large signs that say fireworks in this area only.”
Fireworks operators will have to follow a set of rules, says Hanover. Operators will be responsible for cleaning up any messes they make, ensuring any children present are closely watched and making sure only fireworks approved by Game and Parks can be shot off.
Hanover says Game and Parks officers don’t want to punish people, but they will if they have to.
“We try to make it as family friendly as possible” says Hanover,” but if it really comes down to it, we do have to stop illegal activity.”
