A 57-year-old Lincoln man has been killed after he attempted to drive a dump truck across a private railroad crossing near Ashland and failed to clear the tracks in time to avoid an oncoming train.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office identifies the victim as Shawn Sandrin.
The sheriff’s office reports Sandrin was traveling north into the Horseshoe Lake area Tuesday morning. He drove through a stop sign in front of the railroad crossing. It is a private crossing, not equipped with an electronic warning system.
Sandrin drove in front of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train westbound at 50 miles an hour. The train crew blasted its horn and hit the emergency brakes but could not stop in time before smashing into the side of the truck.
