One thousand members strong and with over $5-million dollars in assets, The Enable Savings Plan allows Nebraskans with qualifying disabilities to access accounts that allow for a slew of tax reductions for services pertaining to the disability.
“A person with a disability or their family members is eligible for state tax deductions for up to $10-thousand dollars,” says State Treasurer Don Stenberg, a trustee of the program.
In addition to the tax reductions, Stenberg says money put into Enable accounts won’t affect eligibility for Medicaid or other supplementary income sources. Stenberg hopes many more disabled Nebraskans will take advantage of the program over time as word of its benefits spread.
The program is made possible thanks to the passing of the federal Achieving a Better Life Experience Act in 2014 and a follow up law by passed by Nebraska Unicameral in 2015.
Those who think they qualify can apply for an account by going to the State Treasure’s website or go to enablesavings.com
