Nebraska joined several other states in operation “Donate With Honor”. Attorney General Doug Peterson says it is designed to take down fake charities that claim to help veterans.
Peterson says, “We have joined with the Federal Trade Commission and other state Attorneys General or Secretaries of State just to let them know there has been some active prosecutions taken against some of these fraudulent charitable organizations who manipulate or falsify a connection to some military veteran’s purpose. It is pretty despicable because Americans are great charity supporters and when these organizations step in and take advantage of that charity. What we are trying to do is not only prosecute them but make sure that donors are giving to valid charitable vet organizations.”
Peterson says the scammer’s most likely call the victims and ask for personal information. They typically are high pressure calls. Peterson says you can ask that they send materials to you by mail and if they refuse simply hang up.
Peterson says, “In Nebraska we have not had any complaints. Not saying that it hasn’t happened but no one has contacted our office but still the same we want to make Nebraskans aware.”
