There has been a significant increase in the number of indecent exposure reports in Omaha and Lincoln over the past few weeks. To get answers as to why this is happening we asked Dr. Steve Wengel who is the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Campus Wellness at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and at the University of Nebraska – Omaha. He says those involved typically fall into one of two groups.
Dr. Wenzel says, “On the one hand they have a psychiatric disorder of exhibitionism where they do that sort of things as a means to an end or for sexual gratification. But then I think there is this whole other group of people that this is a side effect of something else. Certainly things like if a person has a bipolar disorder and might be in a manic phase or example or sometimes people with schizophrenia may be responding to hallucinations or delusions. People that are high on certain drugs or intoxicated that sort of thing. The behavior may look the same but I think often times they fall in one of those two groups.”
Last Friday, a Lincoln man exposed himself outside of a Wal-Mart store and was later located at a nearby bus stop. When officers contacted him the suspect exposed himself again.
Wengel says this is much different from other crimes where people rob, assault or kill others for a specific reason. The pay off in exposure cases isn’t overly obvious unless they have a need to shock unsuspecting people. In that case deep therapy is needed to get to the reason why.
