On January 31, 2016, Sarah Root had just graduated from Bellevue University when she was killed in a tragic car accident caused by an illegal immigrant who was street racing in Omaha. That person posted bond and left the country yet to be found.
Sarah’s mother, Michelle Root remembers when she took her daughter to get her driver’s license when she was 16 and she volunteered to be an organ donor. Root has been in contact with the person who received Sarah’s heart. Root says the heart recipient’s wife had emailed her and stated her husband’s birthday is coming up and they would love meet.
That meeting will be Sunday and Root is preparing for a very emotional day. She says, “I get to hear my baby’s heart beat again. That is going to be very emotional but very rewarding in its own way as well.”
Root says Sarah was able to give the gift of life to this man who now has energy again and is keep up with his grandchildren. Root says they seem to be a very wonderful family.
Root says Sarah is the real hero of this tragic story as she saved several lives through organ donations. She says that has helped ease some of the pain of losing Sarah in such a tragic way.
