September 24th will be a big day for female veterans in Nebraska. Evonne Williams is the organizer of the first Female Veterans Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
Williams says, “This is an all-female veteran’s flight to Washington D.C. We are so thrilled we have almost all of the seats filled for 135 women veterans. Most of them will be from Iraq, Afghanistan and Desert Storm but we have a handful from Vietnam and a few even from WWII that are 98 years old and they are in great shape. We are really excited. This will be a different flight. All of our volunteers will be females on the plane and all of the media will be female as well.” This flight will include two stops they have not made on past trips and that include the Pentagon and the Women’s Memorials.
Part of the event is a pre-flight dinner that will be held on September 23rd at the Embassy Suites in La Vista. Williams says it is an honor that TV’s MASH star Loretta Swit is the guest speaker at the event. She says Swit is the most famous Army nurse in the country as she played Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the series.
Williams says “She was really accepting of the offer and wanted to come. I think she really appreciates our veterans. She will even be on the plane flying to D.C. in the morning. Rather than taking a direct flight home to New York she is going to D.C. and then go home from there.”
The public is invited to the pre-flight dinner. The cost is $100 per person and it will start at 6 p.m. Reservations are required. Williams says they continue to accept donations to fund the trip.
