The endless cycle of fad diets continue to make headlines and people snatch them up as they look for an easy fix to lose weight. The latest on the list include the Military Diet and the Keto Diet. Tracie Jackson is a nutrition therapist at Nebraska Medicine and says, “You can’t really argue with these diets because they do work for weight loss but losing weight is the easy part. Keeping it off is the hard part.”
Jackson says one of the reasons that fad diets don’t work long term is that your body tries to protect you. She says, “It may let you lose weight up front because it is like what is going on. At some point it catches you and it thinks it is saving you from starving to death.”
One the more popular diets now is the Military Diet. Jackson says, “That is the point of this diet is you only do the more restrictive part for three days and then a moderate restrictive diet for four days a week it keeps your metabolism from slowing down.”
The popular Keto Diet is a low fat, low carb and moderate protein diet. Jackson says this is another case of being able to eat all of this but none of that. She says that is starvation mode for the body. The body can survive that way but it is not the best way to fuel it. Jackson says when you look at chronic diseases that is not the diet to follow.
Jackson’s problem with fad diets is they ruin relationships with food. They tell you what foods you can binge on or what foods to avoid but do nothing for the good balanced diet that the body needs to function properly.
