A 39-year-old Omaha man has been sentenced to spend half a year in federal prison, then serve three years of supervised release for scamming the Social Security Administration out of nearly $50,000.
The United States Attorney’s Office reports Willie Luther Downie has been ordered to pay restitution of $48,579.
Federal prosecutors say Downie began receiving Social Security checks in the spring of 2010. The Social Security Administration had Downie sign a Report of Continuing Disability in 2014 on which he falsely claimed he had not been employed previously and had not received any pay since October of 2007.
The Social Security Administration and the Office of Inspector General determine Downie had been working in Nebraska as a tree trimmer, earning a bit more than $18,000 between March of 2013 and September of 2014. Downie had received Social Security benefits for which he did not qualify.
