The Trump Administration outlined plans to create a 6th branch of the military with the creation of the U.S. Space Force. Congressman Don Bacon says the U.S. already has a huge head start in this field.
Congressman Bacon says, “We have the most dependent military on space when it comes to intelligence, communications, navigation. No other country uses it to the degree that we do but really for communications. We control a lot of our stuff overseas using our satellites. We are very vulnerable because of that. China and Russia have invested in weapons systems to shoot down our satellites. What we do to try to save money is we combine four or five missions on each satellite. That made them big targets. We are going to have to change that now to single mission satellites to make it harder to do the targeting. Russia and China are working hard to take us out in space day one of a war and we have to be aware of that.” He says what started as reconnaissance and communications has transformed into counter-space and attack space and that evolution continues.
The Department of Defense released a report on Thursday outlining the steps to create the Space Force. It would be a separate branch of the military. Congressman Bacon believes it will be made up of members of all the current branches.
The goal of the Space Force is to ensure American dominance in space. The Trump Administration would like to see it in place by 2020.
