Nebraska’s Treasurer is hoping attendees of the Nebraska State Fair, Husker Harvest Days and Applejack festival take the time to swing by their Unclaimed Property booth.
With somewhere in the ballpark of $170,000,000 in unclaimed property, State Treasurer Don Stenberg tells Nebraska Radio Network it’s always worth a check.
Over and over again, he’s seen people come by the booth on a whim and leave with unclaimed property.
At last year’s state fair, the Unclaimed Property Division returned over $150,000 to 337 individuals; many of whom didn’t even know their property was missing.
“That’s the nature of unclaimed property,” says Stenberg, “If they knew about the property, we wouldn’t have it.”
Types of returned property typically include forgotten rent deposits, unclaimed bank accounts and life-insurance proceeds
Stenberg says if you can’t attend the festivals, you can always check for unclaimed property on the State Treasure’s website. With over 350,000 names in the unclaimed property database you never know what you, or your family, may have lost over the years
