Nebraska carried out its first execution since 1997 and its first by lethal injection this morning.
Carey Dean Moore was strapped down to a gurney, his body covered by a white sheet, except for his left arm which extended out; an IV attached to accept the lethal dose of drugs which would cause his death 30 minutes later.
Moore mouthed “I love you” to family who arrived at the Nebraska State Penitentiary to witness his execution.
Moore then looked up at the ceiling. Shallow breaths became deeper, then labored.
The execution started at 10:24am. A consciousness check was made at 10:29.
Moore coughed. His chest heaved, then stillness.
The curtain to the execution chamber dropped at 10:39 only to open again at 10:53, closing for good at 10:54.
The state pronounced Moore dead at 10:47am.
Moore was sentenced to death for killing two Omaha cab drivers in 1979.
