A 70-year-old man drowned while trying to swim to his boat which drifted from a boat ramp at Beaver Lake in eastern Nebraska.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports Kirk Caven was pronounced dead at Bellevue Medical Center after being pulled from the lake Friday.
According to authorities, Caven was attempting to launch his 16-foot fishing boat from the ramp when it drifted off into the water. He dove into the lake and attempted to swim to the boat. Rescuers pulled him from the water and rushed him to the hospital.
Caven was not wearing a life jacket. There were life jackets on the boat.
Employees at Beaver Lake Marina alerted authorities Friday morning. Rescue crews from the sheriff’s office, Murray Fire and Rescue, the Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission responded.
