The rain continues to fall in areas of eastern Nebraska. Burt, Cass, Cuming, Dodge, Douglas, Johnson, Lancaster, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson, Sarpy, Saunders, Thurston and Washington Counties remain under flood warnings or watches until later this afternoon.
Van DeWald is the lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service and says some areas received more than a good soaking. Some areas of the metro Omaha area have received upwards of five inches of rain.
DeWald says, “Sometimes we get these systems that are pretty wound up, very strong systems. We have a lot of tropical moisture in this system that gave us a lot of rainfall. It doesn’t happen very often but it is not uncommon either.”
Along with the heavy rain, strong winds contributed to problems. There were dozens of reports in the Omaha metro area of downed tree branches and limbs that took down power lines. At one time more than 12,000 people were without power.
The good news is the rain should move out of the area yet this afternoon.
