The catwalk at the Omaha Design Center is getting a lot of foot traffic this week. Brook Hudson is the producer of Omaha Fashion Week and says this is their 11th season of showcasing area designers.
Hudson says, “We have over 30 designers involved in this season. They come from all over the Midwest but a majority of them come from the Nebraska, Iowa area. We start recruiting designers usually six months before shows. We do interviews to determine who is going to get in and then we set them up with our selection panel to go through a mentoring program in the six months leading up to shows.”
Hudson says they held a children’s fashion camp for those 12 to 17 years of age at the start of the summer. This year the high school students were so good they decided to showcase their work on the runway. Hudson says, “We are really passionate about working with the youngest of fashion designers and giving them opportunities to showcase at a level they could do and have access to.”
Hudson says Omaha Fashion Week provides an opportunity for designers to build their portfolio that helps them get into top fashion schools. They have now graduated and are working at some fine fashion houses like Kate Spade and Nordstrom’s.
Omaha Fashion Week is the fifth largest fashion event in the nation. It runs through Saturday.
