United States Senator Ben Sasse defends Attorney General Jeff Sessions, telling Senate colleagues it would be a mistake for President Donald Trump to fire Sessions.
Sasse takes to the floor of the Senate to comment on rumors that Trump is considering firing Sessions.
“I just would like to say in public what I’ve been saying to my colleagues and a message that I just communicated to the president of the United States, and that is that it would be a very, very, very bad idea to fire the Attorney General, because he’s not executing his job as a political hack,” Sasse says during a three-minute address on the Senate floor.
Sasse, a Republican, says the Attorney General’s job is to be faithful to the Constitution and the rule of law.
President Trump, a Republican, has been unhappy with Sessions for recusing himself from any dealings with the Department of Justice’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election. Trump claims Sessions never informed him about his decision to recuse himself from the probe. Trump told Fox News Thursday he put in an attorney general who never took control of the Justice Department.
Trump tweeted earlier this month that Sessions is “scared stiff and Missing in Action.”
Sessions issued a statement Thursday afternoon, “The actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations.”
Sasse tells colleagues the sudden turn of events in Washington is difficult to understand.
“I’m not sure how to interpret the comments over the last couple of hours, but I guess I would just like to say as a member of the Judiciary Committee and as a member of this body, I find it really difficult to envision any circumstance where I would vote to confirm a successor to Jeff Sessions if he is fired, because he’s executing his job rather choosing to act as a partisan hack,” Sasse says.
Sasse states senators might not agree with Session on policy, but they know he is fulfilling the role of attorney general.
“I think everybody in this body knows that Jeff Sessions is doing his job honorably and the Attorney General of the United States should not be fired for acting honorably and for being faithful to the rule of law.”
