A freak accident critically injured a pregnant woman in Douglas County Friday morning. At 7:45 a.m., an SUV driven by Dr. Mark Kusek of Bennington was traveling east on Highway 36 when he hit a deer at144th Street near Bennington. That sent the deer flying into an oncoming westbound vehicle driven by 35 year old Sara Steiner of Omaha. Police report the deer went through the windshield and out the back window. Steiner was struck in the head and remains in critical condition.
Kusek was not injured.
Highway 36 was closed for several hours Friday morning during the investigation.
Authorities warn this is the time of year that deer are on the move, especially at dawn and dusk. Drivers are urged pay special attention to the road and their surroundings, especially in wooded areas.
