An Omaha Gang Unit officer was shot in the line of duty Tuesday afternoon. Deputy Chief Scott Gray says the officer was with three others and made a traffic stop at 40th and Laurel Street in the northeast part of the city just before 4 p.m. Deputy Chief Gray says, “At which time the passenger in the vehicle fled from the vehicle and fired shots at the officers. The officers returned fire striking the passenger. An officer was also hit by gunfire.”
That officer is identified as 42 year old Ken Fortune, an 11 year veteran of the department. Fortune was hit in the shoulder and is now listed in stable condition. The suspect was struck in the chest and shoulder and also is listed as stable.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody. None of the other officers involved were injured. The name of the suspect has not been released and the investigation continues.
